Career goals

I envision two pathways for my career: either working in and around localisation and staying closer to the software industry, or specialising in legal translation and working in or around EU institutions. In either case, I will be studying computer science and NLP for my own enjoyment and to automate some of my translation workflow, and will learn German to ensure I have more opportunities in multilingual project teams. While I tend to lean more towards the localisation and software development side (as I have already explored the legal side for my undergraduate degree), I consider both to be long term options for my career.

I have listed bellow some of my career goals. Note that some of my medium- and long-term goals are mutually exclusive, as it will depend on which pathway I end up choosing. This will most likely be decided by the opportunities I will unlock from finishing my short-term goals.

  • Continue improving in Computer Science and self-study concepts of Natural Language Processing (NLP)
• Medium-term goals
  • Pick up German to a B2 level
  • Learn more about EU law
  • Get certified to produce legally-recognised translations
  • Find clients as a freelance translator/localiser, ideally in technical fields such as Computer Science
  • Further my understanding of NLP
• Long-term goals
  • Using my knowledge of German and EU law, apply for work at EU institutions
  • Work in a language-related field of computer science, applying my NLP knowledge
